"The programme helped me reset my understanding of what it means to operate as a non-exec… I now feel more confident not only in how I approach founders and CEOs, but also in defining my boundaries and focusing on the areas where I can make the biggest impact."
1. What’s your background, and what led you to join the Transition to Portfolio programme?
I spent nearly 20 years at Marshall Amplification in roles like Product Director, Brand Director, and A&R Director for the record label. My background is rooted in music, with a focus on product, brand, and creative leadership.
I joined the programme after starting out as a consultant. I wanted to move into more long term, high level work and make sure I had the right mindset and tools before taking on non exec roles. Connectd was a key part of that transition.
2. What impact did the programme have on your portfolio career?
It helped me understand what a non exec role really involves, very different from being an exec or board director. The structure and clarity gave me the confidence to approach businesses properly.
Even though I thought I knew most of it, the programme gave me the mindset shift I needed to move forward.
3. How has Connectd helped you secure or approach new roles?
The community and events were hugely valuable, especially meeting other non execs at different stages of their journey. Sharing experiences helped build my confidence.
Pitch days were also a highlight. Seeing early stage companies present helped me understand where my skills could fit, what I needed to brush up on, and where I could add the most value.
4. What’s a key lesson that shaped your approach to advisory work?
I learned early on to be crystal clear about what I do and don’t bring to the table. I once had a client ask for help on financials, but that’s not my strength. I had to step back and say,
“That’s not where I add value.”
It taught me to focus on my strengths, set boundaries, and be honest if I’m not the right fit, even if the business is exciting.
5. Do you feel more prepared to take on non exec, fractional, or advisory roles now?
Absolutely.
The programme reset how I think about the non exec role. Coming from exec positions, it’s easy to fall into being too hands on.
Connectd helped me stay focused on the advisory side and that’s where I bring the most impact.
I now approach founders and CEOs with more confidence, and I’m clearer on when to bring in others from my network if a different skillset is needed.
